Summer Socials: Emily's Look

I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago to a rooftop cocktail party at 60 Thompson. Many of my summer favorites are present here - an ethereal dress, flat sandals, an oversized envelope clutch. I love how flats seem to work really well for dressier occasions in the summer, don't you? Oh summer - please could you never end? ;)

Summer is in full swing here in NYC, which means long sunny days, rooftop BBQs, ice cream trucks on every corner, and generally spending as much time outdoors as I can manage. In keeping with this wondrously casual time of year, here is a great outfit for a lazy Saturday hanging around / exploring the city.

Nautical stripes are pretty much my favorite thing going outside of ice cream snickers bars and white wine  (neither of which you wear...at least not intentionally).   I bought this shirt from Zara and considering it's been in steady rotation over the last two months, I think I can officially say that I got my money's worth.  It goes with everything and the bold stripes are so clean and crisp that you can wear it just as easily in a corporate conference room as you can on the high seas (if you should happen to find yourself on one of those).   Here I paired it with a white denim mini, but it also looks amazing with an accordion maxi, ripped up jeans or a pair of pleated shorts.  And as an added bonus, it just so happens to perfectly match my new Kate Spade "Head in the Sand" satchel.  The bag is on super sale right now (seriously it's more than 50% off)...so just on the off chance that you like it too...I've included the link below to the Kate Spade site. :)

There's something so appealing about being on the water in the summertime, even if your version of "on the water" involves a Friday afternoon post-work bender at the Frying Pan. Just north of this legendary Manhattan summer drinking spot, however, you will find an even better way to satiate your nautical tendencies - Hudson River Community Sailing. GL and I recently had the opportunity to take a beginners' sailing lesson at HRCS after we found out about a great deal they were running via Groupon. Although neither of us had ever stepped foot on a sailboat, we had an amazing time, thanks in no small part to our awesome instructor Christin, who despite her approximately 4'8'' frame seemed more than capable of handling the boat on her own, whether or not her two 'students' were along for the ride. We spent the better part of 2 hours cruising up and down the Hudson river, learning some basic sailing lingo, and dodging NY water taxis, then capped off our adventure with a (highly appropriate) lunch from The Lobster Place in Chelsea Market. Best...day...ever...

*Note - this was not the outfit I wore during our sailing lesson - dresses are not compatible with maneuvering around a 24' sailboat, even if you're not really doing very much.

Animal Prints: Po's Look

Diane Von Furstenberg once said that there is "nothing more feminine and flattering than a leopard print" and I could not agree more.   It's feminine, powerful and over the years has become my most reliable wardrobe pick-me-up.  It has transformed more days than I can count from feeling corn chips and coca-cola to champagne and caviar  (okay okay - not champagne and caviar - but definitely worthy of food that can't be purchased at a drug store.) 

While I own leopard in an unnecessary variety of forms (t-shirts, scarves, bags...seriously, it's getting a little absurd) I decided to go with this leopard print maxi dress for Head to Toe's first animal print post.  It's a recent and delightfully affordable purchase that can be worn glam'd up for night or dressed down for day.  Here I've kept things simple with a lariat necklace and black clutch, but if that's not your style this dress also looks great with a black blazer and heels or a jean jacket and casual sandals.

Animal Prints: Emily's Look

My appreciation for animal prints is a recent development. For a long time, I shied away from anything leopard, zebra, snakeskin - the look felt too harsh for me. Since then, I've developed a cautious affinity for animal prints under the right circumstances. I fell for this dress a few months ago when I was looking for a couple of day-to-night dresses that could work for meetings (perhaps with a black blazer) but look 'fun' enough for dinner/drinks in the evening. It has so many qualities that I love: the graphic black and white leopard print, the deep V cut of the back, the structured cap sleeves, and the black leather details on the waist and shoulders. Classic w/ unique details = a piece that will see a lot of rotation in my closet.

Weekend Brunch: Emily's Look

Although fashion and getting dressed-up are a part of life, especially in a big city like New York, casual / comfortable styles are by far the most me. So when it comes to weekends, I don't mess around - if I can't walk 3+ miles in it, can't eat eggs benedict and/or a substantial cheeseburger in it, and can't roll around in the grass in the middle of Central Park in it, it's probably not going to make it into my weekend wardrobe. Here is an outfit I wore recently to a casual weekend brunch - walkable shoes (check), loose / super-soft T-shirt (check), already-grass-stained cut-offs (check) - all in all, the perfect weekend ensemble. ;)

TGIF friends!  When the weekend finally rolls around, it is not unlikely that you will find me (dressed in my favorite floral print romper of course!) at the lovely little coffee shop just around the corner from my apartment, Dames Coffee. The owners and baristas take extraordinary pride in creating each individual beverage, from their organic cappuccinos to authentic Japanese iced matcha. Did I mention they also offer an assortment of Balthazar pastries & scones? Yummm...is it Saturday morning yet?

Spring Blazers: Emily's Look

It goes without saying that a black blazer is a basic wardrobe essential - I have to confess that I own a few and wear them on a quite regular basis. To avoid looking like I'm wearing the exact same outfit every day (which admittedly happens more than it should), I usually go for pieces that have details that make them subtly unique. This blazer is a great example of such a find - the color, cut, and material are all classic, but the puffed shoulders with slightly structural folds add an interesting (and, in the words of my fiancé, "Lady-Gaga-esque") touch. While this piece (available in stores now at Zara!) is great for the office, I also love it for going out paired with a short dress (or in this case, a romper) and heels.
